lyrics

Troubadour

a troubadour no point to sing
except the joy that naming brings
he sang his being like a bird
still it mattered what they heard

he tried to aim the looking glass
at lost ones living to amass
but once his post was overrun
he prayed his foolish task was done

goodbye to the last troubadour
he don’t play here any more
they say he still wrote in that book
but no one has the nerve to look

he’s a twig against the flood
a rising tide of coins and blood
beauty was for yesterday
now it’s time to fade away

so he sold his old guitar
a song can’t carry very far
in a world of steel and bluff
heart words don’t seem strong enough

goodbye to the last troubadour
he don’t play here any more
they say he still wrote in that book
but no one has the nerve to look

he feels these are final hours
troubadours must plumb their powers
they watched him wade across the bend
singing full out to the end
