The Thought Of Tears

where did the last humans go
i saw them trudging through the snow
there were maybe twenty five
they looked half sick and half alive

after their first global tour
it seemed the species might endure
new critics raving so impressed
to hear their makers’ dreams professed

we tried to end with dignity
to sing the ancient songs
our age on earth was over
no use for right and wrong

they would play and then show slides
who knew about their peaceful sides
and they sold samples of cuisine
and told us what the stars might mean

still they could fall at any time
not suited to the altered clime
they needed air and air was gone
few thought that they would last this long

we tried to end with dignity
to sing the ancient songs
our age on earth was over
no use for right and wrong

there seemed little to be done
we clapped and gawked and had such fun
and no promoter dared report
the human days were running short

sad to track their failing state
last rescue efforts way too late
and when i saw them stumble by
the thought of tears dripped from my eyes

we tried to end with dignity
to sing the ancient songs
our age on earth was over
no use for right and wrong
