he came from somewhere distant
and barely spoke a word
but slept out in the pasture
and whistled like a bird

he seemed both wild and tame
and shied from any contact
i never knew his name

i don’t know what’s out there
each soul a foreign land
but i bet he had tales he hoped
someone could understand

he came from somewhere distant
at times i brought him food
he would always drop his eyes
as if to watch was rude

some said beyond the stars
people wanted him removed
and held behind steel bars

i found this sculpture of a heart
just sitting on my lawn
