she left town against my wishes
spoke of plans to see the world
i said love will last forever
then today i finally heard

we were not by then a couple
crazy girl went off alone
still i knew we’d be together
til her friend called on the phone

she was shocked when i spoke marriage
we’re so far from that she said
i’m exhausted from the drama
i’m half afraid i’ll wind up dead

no one really knows what happened
seems they found her in her room
she had just arrived in lisbon
now they’re going to fly her home

i’d been sending lovesick emails
she’d not answered for a while
and perhaps i’d made her frightened
now we’ll never reconcile
